It is our tradition that I sew a birthday dress for our girls. With our eldest I consult with her about the fabrics and pattern that I have in mind. And usually she picks out something a bit different from what I had in mind. This year we agreed on the Raven tunic and dress from Boo and Lu Patterns* right away. We both fell in love with that back!

I picked out stretch velvet fabrics, which were leftovers from this outfit. She wanted to have a dress fully in silver velvet but I didn’t have enough fabric. I needed all three fabrics to make the dress. In the end we settled with the silver on the front and the purple on the back. I probably would have switched those colors around.

This year it was a bit of a challenge to finish on time. We have two birthdays in one week, which means two birthday dresses and birthday parties and celebrations at school. These birthdays are also either during a holiday break or just before a holiday so a lot of things coming together at once. This year it meant I almost finished the dress before we left for our holiday to Italy. I just had to hem the dress. Luckily my mom has a sewing machine in Italy so I could finish the hem. We arrived in the morning of the birthday of our eldest so I finished it right after we arrived so she could wear it on her birthday.

The dress is a great hit. Our girl has been wearing it non stop. She is a big fan of the twirl factor and those flared sleeves.
I said maybe you can also wear it during Christmas? She said “no, I want you to sew something new for Christmas”. Right, so that is what I did. I sewed them some Christmas vests.
