I love comfortable warm vests, but our eldest is all about dresses. So I basically sew dresses for her. Last year she did have a favourite vest with a soft cuddly inside, which is now pasted on to her sister. When she saw it again she said she wanted another one of those. That combined with the perfect teddy fabric that I bought last year resulted in a Cicero vest from Sofilantjes* for our eldest.
Since her vest last year had ears on the hood I added them as well to this Cicero vest. The wrong side of the fabric that I used for the hood is nice and soft by itself so I did not line the hood. I finished the middle seam with a french seam to have a nice clean finish.
In order to add the ears I cut a stripe of 2,5 cm off the hood (on both sides) and cut an extra pair for the inside. So in total I had 6 pieces of fabric for the hood. For the ears I cut 2 rectangular pieces and brought the ends in a moon like shape to create the ears. I first attached the 2 original pieces of the hood (with a french seam) and added the ears to the hood. For the 4 leftover pieces I attached them, 2 for the outside and 2 for the inside and then I sewed the two long pieces together to form the front seam of the hood. Lastly I folded the piece I just sewed with the wrong sides together and put this on the hood with the right sides together. The ears are in between the hood and the front piece and I then sewed this together with the raw sides lining up. This way you get a nice finish on the front side and I did not have to line the complete hood.
The fabric that I used for the Cicero has a nice teddy on the inside so I sized 2 sizes up to make sure it would fit around the arms. I used the colour block option on the front but left out the colour block on the back.
The Cicero vest is on sale for 2 weeks with a 20% discount so get the pattern if you don’t own it yet!
