Yesterday evening at 10 o’clock I decided that our girls could use some new mittens. They have mittens, they still use these (different girls this time) but of course for our eldest we didn’t have waterproof mittens in her size. So far during this winter her fleece mittens were warm enough. However, when building a snowman, these fleece mittens become wet and cold very soon. I saw some people sewing mittens from soft-shell. I thought this is a great idea and I have enough scraps from sewing all these soft-shell coats the last years.

So I cut three pairs of Merry mittens from Max and Meena Patterns*, which are free with the code in their Facebook group. Yay for projector file patterns! And this morning just before the girls went outside I sewed them up within half an hour. After sewing the smallest I decided to also add a small strip of fabric so that we can attach them to their coat (so they won’t loose them when going to school).

I didn’t line the mittens and actually it wasn’t necessary. The girls told me they were great. They didn’t have cold hands (of course they were running around throwing snowballs) and their hand didn’t get wet either.
The sizing starts at sizing 0 – 18M infant, all the way up to Adult Large (men). So you can sew up mittens for the whole family. You can also line them, but I didn’t because I wanted to be quick and it wasn’t necessary with temperatures of -5 C. For the wrist band you can use ribbing like I did or you can sew them from soft-shell. The pattern piece is longer in that case. I might sew some elastic around the wrist as the mittens are a bit big so that they do not move up as easily.

Fabric: leftover from this coat for myself, this winter coat for our eldest and this coat for our middle girl
Pattern: Merry mittens from Max and Meena Patterns
Sizing: 0 – 18 infant until Adult Large (Men).
Options: ribbing wristband or in one piece from soft-shell, reversible and lined or just one layer.
