Another winter coat: Blissful Blazer

Right after I made this winter coat for our middle daughter I started with the winter coat for our eldest. I used the Blissful Blazer from Love Notions and made several adjustments to make it warm enough as a winter coat.

I used the Blissful Blazer before when sewing the wedding outfit for our eldest. I still love it and put it on my sewing list to sew another one for our eldest. Then I decided to make a winter coat with it.
The Blissful blazer is a lined jacket with buttons. I wanted the winter coat to have a zipper and I sized up so that the thick wellness fleece on the inside would be roomy enough when wearing winter clothes underneath.

Adjustments:

  • added zipper: the zipper starts at the top of the collar and the zipper goes down onto the bottom ruffle
  • added hood (in addition to the collar)
  • the top ruffle is stitched on the jacket instead of stitched toghether with the bottom ruffle
  • added inseam pockets
  • lined the bottom ruffle
  • added thumbhole cuffs to the sleeves

In order to determine which size to make I measured her with a thick sweater on. I took that measurement and looked which size had that measurement (seam allowance taken into account). I sized up 3 sizes (from size 6 to 12).

After I finished the coat, our daughter wore it to school and she said the coat wasn’t warm enough. While our middle daughter didn’t complain about her coat. I decided to unpick one side of the zipper and one sleeve to inserts extra batting. I added 100 gram (1 cm) batting to the front and back bodice. Our daughter is very happy now with her coat and doesn’t complain about being cold anymore.
