Unicorn & mermaid sweaters

The sweater season is starting soon, so it was time to start sewing sweaters. I actually already started during our summer in Italy. I used the Mega Max Raglan pattern from Max and Meena Patterns*, which includes a lot of different animal details. You can make a regular t-shirt of sweater with it, or add some fun details like I did.

The mega max raglan is a pattern for a t-shirt, so I sized 1 size up for the width because I used french terry fabric. I started off with the scale fabric and wanted to add some fun animal details. Of course both our girls wanted the unicorn horn when I asked what they wanted. For our eldest I added the manes that were part of the unicorn details. I used some wool and added them in the seam of the hood. Let’s see how it holds after washing the sweater.

For our middle daughter I added ears. Ears are so cute, don’t you think. I also wanted to add some detail to the back. In the end I decided on using the dragon spikes, but instead of the pointy top I redraw they into round spikes. So that they would resemble the mermaid scales on the main bodice of the sweater.

I slightly hacked the hood because I didn’t want to line the hood. With the sweater fabric that I used for the hood the inside of the hood is nice and soft, so I felt it wasn’t necessary to line the hood. I used the two pieced hood and made the front piece twice as wide. I folded the front piece of the hood with the wrong sides together and sewed both sides together with the main part of the hood when sewing the seam of the hood. I love the result. It gives a nice finish at the front of the hood without having to line the hood.

The pattern has lots of different options. I used the standard two piece hood, a curved hem and long sleeves. And still it only has 20 pages to print for the sweater itself. Of course for the animal creature details you need to print one or two more pages. But still not a lot of taping to put together the pattern.
